Boat & Sail is a reviews-first magazine covering power boats, sailboats, catamarans, paddle craft, and PWC. Our posture is simple: we review boats the way owners talk about them, not the way builders want them talked about. We do not print press releases. We do not file roundups that were never run past owner forums. We do not write reviews without running the boat or the paddle craft first.

Every long-form review on this site follows the same discipline: runs first, owner-forum cross-reference second, published editorial validation third. The six-dimension scoring rubric shifts weight per category because a pontoon is not a center console and a daysailer is not a bluewater cruiser. The weightings are published on every top guide's methodology block.

Editorial principles

  • Runs before writing. If we have not been aboard the boat, the paddle craft, or the jet ski, we do not publish an in-depth review of it. Gear reviews follow the same rule: we have used the gear, or we have cross-referenced long-term owner reports when personal testing is not feasible.
  • Named sources where they exist. We cite the specific forum thread, the specific published test, and the specific mechanic source when a claim rests on them. We do not present owner-forum consensus as "named in reviews."
  • No fabricated specs, prices, or quotes. If we do not have a number that we can verify, we leave it out. Unknowns are named as unknowns.
  • One love moment, one petty complaint. Real boats have both. Reviews that read as uniformly positive are marketing. Reviews that read as uniformly negative are performance. Neither is what we do.
  • Used-market reality matters. Most buyers shop used. Every review carries a used-market range sampled in the month we publish.

The team

Our editorial team includes working captains, USCG licensees, and a research cohort that specializes in long-term owner-report synthesis. Individual bylines on every review carry credentials and disclose any relationship with the builder in question. See the author index for full bios.

How we're funded

Affiliate links on gear reviews (Amazon, Defender, West Marine where applicable). OEM-direct links on boat reviews where the manufacturer's site has a locator for dealer inventory. We receive no payment from builders for inclusion in a review or top guide. We accept product loans for gear reviews. We do not accept boat loans of any kind. Our test runs happen on owner-borrowed hulls, dealer loaner programs disclosed per-review, and our own boats.
