Every review on this site is built the same way. First, we run the boat. Then we cross-reference what we found against 20 to 30 recent owner reports, model-specific forum threads, and published editorial tests. Then we score on six dimensions, weighted for the category the boat sits in. The review is written around the score, not the other way around.

The runs

We fish the center consoles. We tow behind the wake boats. We sleep aboard the cabin cruisers. We cruise the sailboats and time the tacks. We paddle the SUPs and kayaks in the conditions they are built to handle. For PWC we run the 2-up and the 3-up seats at cruise and under tow. For eFoils we ride the foil under load, not just on glass.

The cross-reference

Forums are where model-specific recurring issues surface. We read the last 12 months of threads on the boat we are reviewing. For center consoles that means The Hull Truth. For sailboats that means Cruisers Forum. For pontoons it means the Pontoon Boat Forum and the builder's Facebook owner group. For PWC it is the Sea-Doo, Yamaha, and Kawasaki subreddits plus jetskiforum.net. For SUPs and kayaks it is r/SUP, r/kayakfishing, and the iRocker / Hobie / Old Town owner groups.

Recall history and year-specific defects come from NHTSA, the builder's service bulletins where public, and the mechanic-level forum threads where USCG-licensed captains and marina service managers speak up. We cite the source on the review, not the observation.

The six-dimension rubric

Every boat review scores on build, performance, accommodations, systems, value, and resale. Weights vary per category because the category's buyers care about different things. The weightings are published on every top guide's methodology block. A pontoon buyer cares more about furniture quality than about rough-water composure. A center console buyer cares the opposite way. The rubric reflects that.

  • Center consoles: Performance 25%, Build 20%, Systems 15%, Value 15%, Resale 15%, Accommodations 10%.
  • Pontoons: Accommodations 25%, Build 20%, Systems 15%, Value 15%, Resale 15%, Performance 10%.
  • Bowriders: Performance 20%, Build 20%, Accommodations 20%, Systems 15%, Value 15%, Resale 10%.
  • Ski & wake: Performance 35% (wave quality), Build 15%, Systems 15%, Value 15%, Resale 10%, Accommodations 10%.
  • Cruising monohulls: Performance 20% (sailing manners), Accommodations 20%, Build 20%, Systems 15%, Value 15%, Resale 10%.
  • Cruising catamarans: Accommodations 25%, Performance 20% (upwind & downwind), Build 20%, Systems 15%, Value 10%, Resale 10%.
  • PWC: Performance 25%, Build 20%, Systems 15% (brake, trim, electronics), Comfort 15% (2-up seat, storage), Value 15%, Resale 10%.

Pricing

New MSRP cited on the builder's current spec sheet, cross-checked against three dealer listings in the publication month. Used-market range sampled from the major broker sites, dealer consignment listings, and the regional brokerage boards owners actually use. We re-sample every quarter for live guides.

Conflicts of interest

We disclose loans, sponsorships, and builder relationships on the review page itself, never in a separate policy nobody reads. Gear reviews run on purchased or loaned product. Loaned product is returned after testing. Boat reviews run on owner-borrowed hulls, dealer loaner programs (disclosed per-review), and our own hulls. We do not accept free boats. We do not accept paid boat placements.

Corrections

If we get a spec wrong, we fix it and we note the correction on the page. If an owner reports a pattern we missed, we update the review. Our reviews are versioned with a "Last updated" date on every page. We revisit top guides quarterly.
