Formula is the family-held premium sport-boat builder from Decatur, Indiana. Founded in 1956, the brand has been Porter-family-owned since 1976 and has stayed family-controlled. The lineup runs from the 240 Bowrider through the 500 Super Sport Crossover sport-cruiser flagship.

The brand argument is the family-held build discipline at the premium tier. Formula competes with Cobalt and Regal on the inland premium bowrider segment, with build quality and resale floor that runs near the segment top.

Model breakdown

Each platform, what it does and where it falls short.

Formula Bowrider series (240 / 270 / 290 / 310)

The Bowrider line is the volume of the brand. Twin Mercruiser sterndrive or Mercury Verado outboard rigging. The 290 is the volume seller.

Things we like

  • · Premium fit and finish at the segment top, comparable to Cobalt
  • · Family-held build discipline supports tight resale floor

Things we don't

  • · Pricing premium over Sea Ray and Four Winns at equivalent LOA
  • · Smaller dealer footprint than Brunswick

Formula Sun Sport series (310 / 330 / 350 / 380 SSC)

Sun Sport Crossover is the sport-cruiser line. Twin Mercruiser sterndrive, mid-cabin with V-berth and head, full convertible dinette.

Things we like

  • · Mid-cabin SSC 350 gives genuine four-person overnight on a 35-foot hull
  • · Premium fit and finish at the segment top

Things we don't

  • · Pricing pushes into Tiara and Cruisers Yachts territory
  • · Smaller used market than Sea Ray Sundancer

Formula Super Sport (387 / 437 / 500 SSC)

SSC flagship line. Twin Mercury Verado V12 outboards or sterndrive options, full forward cabin with master stateroom.

Things we like

  • · Flagship sport-cruiser line with master stateroom and full galley
  • · Family-held production discipline at flagship LOA is unusual

Things we don't

  • · Pricing competes with Tiara EX and Sabre at flagship segment
  • · Production volume small, used inventory thin

Buyer's guide

The Formula story and what to know on the used market.

Origin and ownership

Formula was founded in 1956 by Don Aronow as Thunderbird Formula in Florida. Aronow was the racing-boat designer behind Magnum Marine and Donzi. The brand was acquired by the Porter family in 1976 and consolidated production at the Decatur, Indiana facility.

The Porter family has owned Formula since 1976 and has not pursued external ownership. Production has stayed in Decatur, single-site. The brand has stayed family-controlled across multiple generations.

Design philosophy

Formula hulls run moderate-V (typically 19 to 22 degrees at the transom on the bowrider line). Premium fit and finish at the segment top, comparable to Cobalt and Regal.

Mercruiser sterndrive and Mercury Verado outboard are the standard rigging options. The flagship SSC 500 can be ordered with twin Mercury Verado V12 600 outboards, which is unusual at this LOA outside dedicated motor yacht builders.

Used-market notes and known issues

Mercruiser 6.2L sterndrive bellows tear on 2015+ hulls past five years.

Mercruiser 8.2L H.O. on flagship hulls has documented riser corrosion at 800 hours, replace as preventive.

Cushion vinyl on 2017 to 2019 hulls in sun-heavy markets shows delamination.

Dealer network smaller than Brunswick but professional, concentrated in the Midwest and East Coast.

Resale

Formula holds resale near the top of the inland premium sport-boat segment. Three-year depreciation runs 12 to 18 percent. Five-year depreciation runs 22 to 30 percent.

Where Formula fits

Buyers cross-shop Formula against Cobalt, Regal, and Sea Ray Sundancer on the premium bowrider and sport-cruiser segments. The argument is family-held production discipline and segment-top resale.

FAQ

Frequently asked.

How does Formula compare to Cobalt?
Build tier is comparable. Both are family-held premium inland sport-boat builders. Cobalt holds slightly tighter resale; Formula runs slightly higher absolute pricing on equivalent LOA. Cross-shop on dealer proximity and specific layout preference.
Is the 500 SSC a motor yacht?
Borderline. The 500 SSC has motor-yacht-class accommodations (master stateroom, full galley, separate shower) but uses sport-cruiser hull form and outboard rigging. Cross-shop against Tiara EX and Sabre on the boutique sport-yacht segment.
What's the maintenance cost on a 290 Bowrider?
Annual service on Mercruiser 6.2L sterndrive runs $1,400 to $2,000. Bottom paint $400 to $1,000. Storage $2,000 to $5,000. Insurance for a $180,000 hull runs $1,200 to $2,400.
Where are Formulas built?
