Origin and ownership
Formula was founded in 1956 by Don Aronow as Thunderbird Formula in Florida. Aronow was the racing-boat designer behind Magnum Marine and Donzi. The brand was acquired by the Porter family in 1976 and consolidated production at the Decatur, Indiana facility.
The Porter family has owned Formula since 1976 and has not pursued external ownership. Production has stayed in Decatur, single-site. The brand has stayed family-controlled across multiple generations.
Design philosophy
Formula hulls run moderate-V (typically 19 to 22 degrees at the transom on the bowrider line). Premium fit and finish at the segment top, comparable to Cobalt and Regal.
Mercruiser sterndrive and Mercury Verado outboard are the standard rigging options. The flagship SSC 500 can be ordered with twin Mercury Verado V12 600 outboards, which is unusual at this LOA outside dedicated motor yacht builders.
Used-market notes and known issues
Mercruiser 6.2L sterndrive bellows tear on 2015+ hulls past five years.
Mercruiser 8.2L H.O. on flagship hulls has documented riser corrosion at 800 hours, replace as preventive.
Cushion vinyl on 2017 to 2019 hulls in sun-heavy markets shows delamination.
Dealer network smaller than Brunswick but professional, concentrated in the Midwest and East Coast.
Resale
Formula holds resale near the top of the inland premium sport-boat segment. Three-year depreciation runs 12 to 18 percent. Five-year depreciation runs 22 to 30 percent.
Where Formula fits
Buyers cross-shop Formula against Cobalt, Regal, and Sea Ray Sundancer on the premium bowrider and sport-cruiser segments. The argument is family-held production discipline and segment-top resale.
