What defines an eFoil
An eFoil is a battery-powered hydrofoil board: rider stands on a foam or carbon board mounted to an aluminum or carbon strut, with a propeller-driven motor pod and a hydrofoil wing at the bottom. At 8 to 12 mph the wing generates enough lift to raise the entire board out of the water, leaving the rider gliding silently above the surface. Throttle is wireless via a handheld remote. Lithium-ion battery packs of 1.6 to 2.5 kilowatt-hours deliver 60 to 120 minutes of riding depending on rider weight, ride style, and water conditions.
Buyers self-sort by four filters before they read a single review: skill level (board volume and wing area drive the learning curve), battery ride time, build quality (carbon versus inflatable versus EPP), and price tier. The new market sits firmly above $7,000 and used inventory is just starting to build at sub-$5,000.
What buyers actually pay
eFoil depreciation is steep because the technology generation matters: a 2020 Lift was effectively obsolete by 2023 when battery density and motor efficiency jumped. Year-one depreciation runs 20 to 28 percent. The used sweet spot is the 2 to 4-year-old window where pricing has stabilized but the board is still on a current-generation battery. Premium brands (Lift, Fliteboard) hold 10 to 15 percent more value than mid-tier (Waydoo) at three years. Operating cost is low: a full charge runs $0.30 to $0.60 of electricity, and the only consumable is propeller and prop-shaft seals every 100 to 200 hours.
Model-year defects worth screening
Pre-2021 Lift batteries had a documented BMS firmware issue that limited cell balancing late in discharge cycles, surfaced across owner-mechanic forum threads. Lift offered a free firmware update; verify any used Lift has the post-2021 update applied. Fliteboard Series 2 boards (2019 to 2020) had a strut-to-board mounting bolt corrosion pattern in salt service. Waydoo Flyer ONE generation-one boards had a propeller-blade pitting issue in sandy beach launches; the post-2022 redesign improved the prop alloy. Across all brands, the screen on a used eFoil is battery health: ask for a full discharge log from the app and verify cycle count below 200 for premium use.
