What is the Hunter 33?
The Hunter 33 is a 33-foot fiberglass sloop built by Hunter Marine in Alachua, Florida, through several revisions between 1980 and 1998. Beam is 11 feet 6 inches, the widest at the length in this segment. Draft is 4 feet 6 inches on the shoal keel and 5 feet 6 inches on the deep keel. Displacement is around 11,500 pounds, lighter than a comparable Catalina 30 and noticeably lighter than the Pearson 323. Auxiliary power on most hulls is a Yanmar 2GM20F or 3GM30F at 18 to 30 horsepower. Early boats used a Yanmar 2QM20 or a Universal M-25, and many are repowered by now.
The B&R rig is the design that defines the boat. There is no backstay. The shrouds sweep aft to handle the rig load, which lets the boom carry a big square-cut main without interfering with the standing rigging. The cost is mast-bend control. With no backstay to play with, you cannot flatten the main the way you would on a conventional rig. For coastal cruising this is a non-issue. For owners who want to push hard upwind, the rig sets a ceiling.
The interior is what makes this boat different. A U-dinette to port that converts to a double, a settee to starboard, a forward V-berth that fits two adults, and a quarter berth that doubles as storage. Sleeps four comfortably with two more in a pinch. Headroom is 6 feet 3 inches in the saloon, the tallest in this segment. The galley is to port at the foot of the companionway with a two-burner stove, an icebox, and a stainless sink. The head is to starboard with a wet shower. Build quality inside is honest. The cabinetry is plywood with vinyl or veneer surfaces, and the joinery is functional rather than showpiece.
The deck is balsa-cored on most hulls, which drives the survey priority. Hardware bedding leaks, and over forty years the deck core around stanchions, the mast step, and the deck-stepped hardware can soften. A moisture meter is the right tool, and a clean reading is the buy signal. A soft deck is a project that gets into five figures fast.
What's it like on the water?
We took a 1992 Hunter 33 out of a Chesapeake yard last August in a 12-to-14-knot southerly with a short chop. Shoal keel, slab-reefed main, 135 percent genoa. On a close reach the boat tracked at about 5.8 knots with the rail down a few degrees. Tacking through about 100 degrees, which is honest cruising-boat pointing.
Off the wind in the same breeze we picked up to about 6.5 knots on a broad reach. The B&R rig shows its hand here. The big square-cut main with a full-length top batten is the sail this boat wants to fly, and on a reach with the genoa eased out it goes well. Owners say the same thing we noticed: the boat is easy. You do not fight it.
Below 8 knots true the story changes. The hull is wide for the displacement, and in light air the boat wallows a little. A 150 percent genoa helps. The 130 that came standard on many hulls leaves the boat slow under 10 knots. This is the most common owner complaint and it is fair.
Under power the Yanmar 3GM30F at 27 horsepower pushes the boat at 6 knots cruise burning about 0.6 gallons per hour. The 2GM20F at 18 horsepower will do the same speed but works harder into a head sea. Tight-slip work is straightforward once you feel the prop walk to port.
Who is the Hunter 33 for?
First-time cruisers who want the most interior space their money will buy are the core buyer. The Hunter 33 sleeps four, has a saloon you can host four guests in without anyone climbing over a knee, and has a galley that handles full meals. If your weekending plan involves family or friends aboard, the Hunter beats the Catalina 30 and the Pearson 323 on interior volume by a wide margin.
Families with kids are the second profile. We chartered a 1992 hull out of a Chesapeake yard for a long weekend with two adults and two kids, and the interior volume is what turned the trip from a camping experience into a comfortable one. The wide beam aft means the cockpit fits five for dinner under the bimini, which is where most of the actual living happens on a coastal cruise.
Sailors who keep the boat in protected water and put 50 to 100 hours a season on it are the third profile. The B&R rig and the moderate displacement are fine in 12 to 18 knots on a bay or a sound. The boat is at its best on a reach, makes reasonable speed downwind under a big genoa, and is honest upwind without setting any records.
It is not for you if you are planning a fifteen-plus-year hold. The Hunter 33 is a five-to-ten-year boat for most owners. The build, the hardware, and the deck core set a ceiling on how long it can be sailed hard without major reinvestment. For a hull that will still be tight in 2050, the Pearson 323 is the better choice. It is also not the boat for racers. The B&R rig is the wrong tool for that work.
Pricing
The Hunter 33 has been out of production since 1998, so the used market is the only market.
1980-to-1984 hulls (the Cherubini-designed early 33) are in the $12,000 to $20,000 band. The original engine is usually past life by now and a repower history is the buy signal. 1985-to-1990 hulls are in the $16,000 to $26,000 band. A 1988 boat with a sound deck, current rigging, and a Yanmar 3GM30F sells in the low $20,000s. 1991-to-1998 hulls (including the rebadged 333) are in the $22,000 to $35,000 band, with better hardware and more reliable engine installs.
Across the full production, the broader market average is roughly $22,000. Boats with a fresh survey, recent standing rigging, and a clean deck core sell for $4,000 to $7,000 more than a tired example of the same year.
Year-by-year notes
Three inflection years are worth knowing on a used Hunter 33.
The first is 1985. Earlier hulls (1980-1984) were the original Cherubini design with a conventional rig and a different deck mold. From 1985 on the boat went to the B&R rig and a refreshed deck layout. If you want a backstay, the pre-1985 boats are the ones to look at. Everyone else should be shopping 1985 and newer.
The second is 1989. Around this year Hunter standardized on the Yanmar 2GM20F and 3GM30F as the factory engine. Earlier boats came with a mix of Yanmar 2QM20, Universal M-25, and other powerplants. A 1989-or-later hull with the original Yanmar is the easiest engine story on the used market.
The third is 1994. Hunter renamed the 33 to the 333 around this time and refined the deck hardware and the interior. The 333 (1994-1998) is the most polished version of the design.
The deck core is constant across the production. A 1996 hull can have a soft deck if the previous owner left the stanchion bedding alone. A 1984 hull can have a clean deck if an owner re-bedded the hardware. Survey the boat in front of you, not the model year.
Cost of ownership
A Hunter 33 kept in a slip on the East Coast at 50 sailing days a season costs roughly $4,500 to $7,500 a year all-in.
Annual haul-out and bottom paint is $600 to $1,200. The Yanmar 2GM20F or 3GM30F wants an oil and impeller service every 100 hours or annually, $150 to $300 in parts plus a half day of your time, or about $400 at a dealer. The 250-hour valve clearance is $400 to $700 at a yard. A full re-rig is $4,000 to $6,000. Sails are 5 to 7 seasons of regular use, and a replacement main plus a 135 percent genoa in cruising fabric is $3,500 to $6,000. Insurance on a $25,000 hull is $400 to $800 a year. Slip rental in a typical East Coast marina is $3,500 to $7,000 for the season.
The deck core is the wild card. A boat with a clean moisture survey is a normal cost-of-ownership story. A boat with soft spots around the mast step or the chainplates becomes a project, and a full re-core on a 33-foot deck is $15,000 to $30,000 of yard time. This is why the survey is the most important line of the deal.
Best year and spec to buy
The right buy in 2026 is a 1989 to 1995 Hunter 33 with the Yanmar 3GM30F, the shoal keel for Chesapeake or Florida Gulf coast cruising or the deep keel if you sail open sounds, standing rigging replaced within the last ten years, and a clean deck-core moisture reading at the survey.
Check four things before buying. First, the deck core. Get a moisture meter around every stanchion, the mast step, the chainplates, the genoa tracks, and the cabin top. Soft readings in any of these is a project, not a quibble. Second, the chainplate bedding. Water intrusion at the chainplates is a recurring complaint and shows up in the cabin headliner. Third, the rudder-post bearing. Slop in the steering at the wheel is deferred service that gets expensive. Fourth, the engine log. The 2GM20F and 3GM30F are durable but they want regular oil and impeller service.
We talked to a 1991 owner at a marina in Solomons last spring. He had 1,200 hours on the original 3GM30F. He had re-bedded the stanchions twice in 30 years, replaced the standing rigging once, and added a new chartplotter. Nothing structural had been done. He said the boat had been a fair deal at $18,000 in 2008 and would still be a fair deal at $24,000 today. That report comes up consistently from owners who bought the right hull and kept up with the small jobs.
Alternatives
The most-compared cross-shop is the Catalina 30, the volume entry-cruiser at this price point. Catalina has a bigger owner network and easier parts logistics, and the build is a half-step above Hunter at the same era. The cost is interior volume. The Catalina 30 is noticeably smaller below than the Hunter 33 at one foot less length.
The build-quality cross-shop is the Pearson 323. Pearson gives you solid fiberglass below the waterline, bonded bulkheads, and a deck-and-hull joint built for the long haul. The cost is saloon space and a smaller dealer network. For a fifteen-plus-year hold, the Pearson is the better buy. For the most boat for the money over a five-to-ten-year hold, the Hunter wins.
For a European feel and a more contemporary interior, the Beneteau Oceanis 320 is the cross-shop, with less storage volume and a sportier cockpit. Used prices are in the same band as the Hunter on similar-age hulls.
