What defines an inflatable boat

The category covers two very different boats. Soft-floor inflatables (Intex, Sevylor) are PVC tubes with a removable air or slatted floor, sized 8 to 11 feet, used as casual lake craft and small fishing platforms. Rigid inflatable boats (RIBs) combine a fiberglass or aluminum V-hull with inflatable tubes around the perimeter; sizing runs 8 to 24 feet, with the small end dominating the yacht-tender market and the larger end serving as serious coastal day boats. The premium RIB market splits between Hypalon tube fabric (longer UV life, more expensive) and PVC (cheaper, shorter service life in tropical use).

Buyers self-sort by four filters before they read a single review: length, hull style (soft-floor versus RIB and fiberglass versus aluminum), intended use (tender, day boat, fishing), and price tier. The new market spans a 200x range from $150 to $30,000.

What buyers actually pay

Soft-floor inflatables depreciate to near zero after 5 to 7 years because UV degradation kills the PVC. Premium RIBs depreciate slowly: year one runs 12 to 18 percent on Highfield, AB, and Zodiac, and five-year depreciation lands at 25 to 35 percent if the boat lived under cover. Hypalon-tube boats hold value 10 to 15 percent better than PVC equivalents at five years. The used sweet spot for RIBs is the 4-to-7-year window where the deck is still tight and the tubes have not yet hit the 10-year service-life threshold.

Model-year defects worth screening

The single biggest used-RIB risk is tube-to-hull bonding failure. Pre-2017 Walker Bay Genesis boats had a known PVC-to-fiberglass adhesion pattern that started failing at 6 to 8 years, surfaced across owner-mechanic forum threads. Highfield aluminum RIBs from 2014 to 2016 had an aluminum-tube valve corrosion issue specific to brackish service. Zodiac Medline boats 2015 to 2017 had a console wire-routing pattern that chafed through the harness at the helm. On any used RIB, the screen is straightforward: an overnight pressure-hold test on each tube section and a careful visual on the tube-to-hull seam.
