Buyer's guide

The Sea-Doo story and what to know on the used market.

Origin and ownership

Sea-Doo is the PWC division of Bombardier Recreational Products (BRP), founded in 1968. The brand pioneered the modern closed-loop cooled PWC and grew into the volume leader in the US market.

Hulls are produced at BRP's Querétaro and Juárez plants in Mexico; Rotax engines at Gunskirchen, Austria. The Switch hybrid PWC-pontoon platform launched in 2022.

BRP has owned the brand throughout.

Design philosophy

Sea-Doo PWCs use BRP-designed hulls with Rotax marine engines. The supercharged 300 and 325 horsepower flagships use the same closed-loop cooling architecture across the lineup.

iBR forward-neutral-reverse brake is the brand's docking-and-control argument. Hydraulic steering on GTX flagships.

Terminology you should know

iBR
Intelligent Brake and Reverse. Forward-neutral-reverse brake control standard on most Sea-Doo PWCs from 2009 onward.
Spark / Spark Trixx
Entry polytec-hull platforms.
GTI / GTX / RXP-X / RXT
Recreation, touring, performance ski, and performance flagship lines.
Fish Pro
Fishing-spec PWC subline. Livewell, rod holders.
Switch
Modular PWC-pontoon hybrid platform launched 2022.

Used-market notes and known issues

Supercharger service at 100 hours is non-negotiable on RXP-X 300 and 325, RXT 300, and GTX Limited 300 and 325. Pre-purchase, ask for documented service history.

iBR linkage corrosion on 2018 to 2020 saltwater-stored skis. Documented on owner-mechanic forum threads. Two-hour fix at the dealer.

Wear ring (jet-pump liner) replacement is a 200 to 300-hour item across the lineup, sooner on hulls in shallow rocky water.

BRP dealer network is broad in the US; service quality varies by dealer.

Resale

Sea-Doo holds resale at the segment top alongside Yamaha. Three-year depreciation runs 18 to 25 percent on supercharged flagships. Five-year depreciation runs 30 to 38 percent.

Where Sea-Doo fits

GTI and Spark trade against the Yamaha VX and EX on family use and price. GTX Limited 325 trades against the Yamaha FX SVHO and Kawasaki Ultra 310LX on the touring flagship segment. RXP-X 325 trades against the Kawasaki Ultra 310X on the performance segment. The Switch is its own market: there is no direct competitor in the modular-PWC-pontoon category.

FAQ

Frequently asked.

Is iBR worth it?
Yes for any saltwater or dock-in / dock-out use. The forward-neutral-reverse brake control simplifies docking and improves maneuverability at low speed. Sea-Doo iBR has been segment-leading since 2009 and competing brands have struggled to match.
Sea-Doo or Yamaha?
Both segment-leading PWC brands with comparable build quality. Sea-Doo gives iBR docking control and the Switch hybrid platform. Yamaha gives RecDeck accessory compatibility and the SuperJet stand-up. Cross-shop on dealer proximity and specific feature preference.
What's the maintenance cost on a GTX 300 Limited?
Annual service runs $700 to $1,200 plus 100-hour supercharger service at $600 to $900. Insurance for a $20,000 hull runs $400 to $900. Trailer storage $500 to $1,500.
Where are Sea-Doos built?
Hulls at BRP's Querétaro and Juárez plants in Mexico. Rotax engines at Gunskirchen, Austria. Brand HQ at Valcourt, Quebec, Canada.
